Can I be a whale?
我可以是一条鲸鱼吗?
Before it met you · 遇见你之前
每一件,都已经走过了一小段人生。
Nothing in the house was manufactured. Before a piece reaches you it goes through eight stages and two fires, and not all of them make it. The ones waiting for you did.
Roughly fifteen begun for every ten that arrive.
01
It starts as a lump of clay, kneaded by hand until the air is pressed out. Nothing about it has been decided yet.
02
Pinched, coiled or thrown into a shape that is sure of itself (a fin, a tail, a spout) and unsure of its use.
03
While it is still soft enough to mark, a question is carved into its skin. It carries that question for the rest of its life.
04
It dries slowly for days, giving up its water. Uneven drying is where the first cracks appear.
Some don’t survive this
05
The bisque firing turns clay into ceramic. After this, it can never go back to being mud.

06
Dipped in its family’s glaze: sea green or grey speckle. Wherever it could hold water, the inside is glazed through.

07
The hottest day of its life. Glaze melts into glass, and what comes out is never quite what went in.
Some don’t survive this
08
Inspected at every join and rim, given a name, and placed in the house with its question. Then it waits.
09 · The stage that isn’t ours
You take it home and decide what it is. We won’t tell you, and honestly we don’t know yet either. When it has found its place, send us one photograph of what it became. We’ll add it to the story, credited to you.

第一个家族:我可以是一条鲸鱼吗?
Every piece in this family shares a marine glaze (sea green or grey speckle), one clay body, and one gesture: a fin, a tail, a spout. Beyond that, each is its own individual.
